The heat is on. It is the start of the Binibining Pilipinas season and they are on the path of choosing the Philippine representative to the Miss Universe, Miss International and Miss Tourism Queen International Beauty Pageants for 2012. Some 30 bevy of beauties were chosen and let me dissect the candidates based on my own personal criteria of who are the candidates that possess the following: Beauty of Face, Body Beautiful, Height, Poise, Charisma, Communication Ability and the so-called X-factor. Many people would argue what X-factor is all about but this writer would define it as something that is hard to describe quality that exerts an outstanding influence to one’s personality. The following are the official candidates of the Binibining Pilipinas 2012:

Here’s my evaluation of the candidates:
FACE FACTOR – 1, 5, 7,8, 14,15, 21,22,29,30

Candidate 1 is Karen Gallman. Karen with her mestiza features possesses a very beautiful face. She is angelic and stands 5’5” tall among this batch of candidates. Her face is truly something to behold when she stands side by side with other candidates. Her sweet countenance makes her face more beautiful.
Candidate 5 is Rose Ann Aguilar. She is a girl of mestiza-Chinese features. She has a sweet and endearing face.
Candidate 7 is Patricia Lae Ejercitado who has the exotic, kayumangging kaligatan persona. Her sweet smiling eyes radiates into her beautiful face.
Candidate 8 is Nicole Schmitz. Nicole’s mestiza features is a hit among Filipinos. Her smile is radiating and gives a sweet countenance to her face. However, I noticed that Nicole is much prettier with make-ups which are simple. She becomes more sophisticated with it.
Candidate 14 is Gina Joy Howell. Gina is a fashion and commercial model. Her face is so pretty and but despite that, during the screening, she appeared to be just a wannabe and thus she needs to step up if she wants to be noticed and be one of the winners in the pageant.
Candidate Number 15 is Elaine Kay Moll. She is a statuesque young lady who towers among all the contestants. With that height, coupled with a decent and beautiful face, Elaine is one of the candidates with a face factor. However, her face reflects a shy countenance something that candidates to international pageants should not have.
Candidate Number 21 is Giselle Angelica Munoz. Giselle’s face is so charming but not necessarily saccharinely sweet. She however does not have a consistent projection in pictures. She should carefully look into her styling and make-up to sustain consistency with that charming face.
Candidate Number 22 is Meiji Cruz. She is one of the underrated girls in this years’ pageant. She has a pretty and benevolent face. She however must learn to know what make-up and styling should suit her so that she would have a consistent projection.
Candidate Number 29 is Ali Forbes. She possesses a beautiful face. She is a model and a singer and had joined other pageants that she eventually won or placed runner-up. She had this engaging expression in the face that made her endearing to the audience. These qualities she takes with her in her competition to the Binibining Pilipinas.
Candidate Number 30 is Sherlyn Gonzales. She is cute. She is lovable and she had that beautiful face everyone loves.
BODY FACTOR - 4,5,7,8,9,14, 26, 29
Candidate Number 4 is Jaine Hidalgo. She has a body well-contoured.
Candidate Number 5 is again noted with a good body. Some says, Rose Ann has the Kurara Chibana vibe.
Candidate Number 7 is a good learner. From her previous performance, she came out exceedingly well in her reemergence as a candidate for 2012. She has a very good body to die for. The way she projected herself in that pink swimsuit, she is a formidable candidate.
Candidate Number 8 is a lively personality onstage and with the way she moved In her swimsuit, you would see that she is a veteran of many pageants. She is one candidate that owns the stage. She had also a very good body physique.
Candidate number 9 is MJ Lastimosa. The girl that created a lot of commotion among fans because of that body that showed a very slim waistline. She is one candidate that is very competitive in the swimsuit competition.
Candidate Number 14 is Gina Joy Howell. Her height is completed with a very lithe body. She is a revelation in swimsuit.
Candidate Number 26 is Angelee Delos Reyes. Angelee is not a newbie in the swimsuit department. She had been a winner in Bikini Contests and she has a body to show. She is shapely and a contender for the best in swimsuit award.
Candidate Number 29 is Ali Forbes. Again Ali wows everyone with her shapely physique. She is great onstage.
HEIGHT/ELAN/CARRIAGE/PERSONALITY FACTOR – 7,8,9, 14,15,18
This portion shows the relatively tall girls with the personality factor. Candidate Number 7 is again on the list. She is the girl that exerts considerable effort to look different in every public appearance they had. Candidate Number 8 shows an innate charm despite the poor styling she had. She moves with impeccable strut. She has a bubbly personality. However, I think I still prefer her enigmatic personality in her previous outings. Candidate Number 9 is well-loved. She receives a lot of oh’s whenever she moves. However, some pundits remark that she seemed tired and worn-out during the screening and is not her bubbly self. Candidate Number 14 attracts attention because of her facial beauty and good body proportions. She does well in the ramp but despite her exposure to past pageants, she still seems to act like a novice on stage. Candidate Number 15 attracts attention because of her height and simple beauty. She moves well but because of her shy demeanor, this becomes a negative factor for her. Candidate Number 18 knows how to bring life to the ramp. With her training as the out-going first runner-up, she showed flair and style onstage. This will be a great source of confidence for her.
ACUMEN FACTOR – 1,7,8, 14,15,18,27,28,29
Acumen refers to the candidates’ wisdom, communication skills, and ability to express oneself in an audience, wit and demeanor. I have not really interviewed these girls personally but I based my evaluation based on the TV interviews, YouTube interviews and performances in their previous pageants. If before, it would be very hard for us to evaluate the girls and just wait for pageant night to hear them, at present we can evaluate the girls because of the advances in technology. I placed wisdom here not intelligence because we do not really measure one’s intelligence in beauty pageants. We measure their ability to respond to questions in their own personal capacity, hence, they are espousing the wisdom that they had.
As for this group, I found Candidate 1 to be very comfortable in answering questions. She has no qualms in advancing her ideas to thought-provoking questions. She is very witty and has a very modern demeanor. I find Candidate Number 7 as able to expound her thoughts about a subject matter. But unlike Candidate Number 1, she is somewhat tentative in starting out to answer before she starts expounding on the subject matter. She is succinct and direct to the point. Candidate Number 8 is a good communicator. Having been raised in Australia, imparting her thoughts in English is not a problem. I still placed Candidate Number 14 here although I have not been able to see any interviews about her, a personal friend told me that she can eloquently express herself.
Candidate Number 15 is a revelation. She exudes an introverted aura but she did very well in the Meet the Press Question and Answer. She had good skills in communication and had a good grasp of what the question is.
Candidate Number 18 did a good job in her question and answer portion. There is no doubt that this girl can speak her mind. It was noticeable that she answers the questions concisely and directly as compared to the past that her answers were cliché.
Candidate Number 27 is another girl that came out so well in the communication department. There is no doubt because this lady is a Doctor of Physical Therapy. But being a newbie in the pageant scene, will she last?
Candidate Number 28 Marie Irisha Arcenas speaks her mind very well. She is well-verse with any topic to note.
Candidate Number 29‘s pageant history showed that she can expound on questions that are asked of her. She can speak her mind and thus she had the ability to come across.
THE GIRLS WITH THE X-FACTOR: 1,4, 6,7,8,9
Candidate Number 1 simply oozes with sex appeal. Candidate Number 4 comes across as subtly sexy while Candidate Number 5 comes out for the first time in my listing because she simply attracts people. Candidate Number 7 is a vixen. Candidate Number 8 is a vivacious vamp while Candidate Number 9 is attractively different.
POSSIBLE TOP 5 CHOICES: 1,7,8,9,18
I gave 1 point each for any girl that came on my list from the criteria that I placed above. I have two girls who garnered 5 points each and they are Candidate Number 7 and 8. The other entire three girls got 3 points each. There were actually 7 girls that garnered 3 points but I used the X-factor criterion to select the other three girls to join my possible Top 5 choices. Some pundits may react to my choices for the X-factor but as I have told you, the definition of the X-factor is that something that pulls you towards that candidate. Hence, I am captivated with these candidates, therefore so be it.
Candidate 1, Karen Gallman charmed me because of her facial beauty and her ability to express herself. She could even break out into a song and what a lovely voice she has. She is a shoo-in for the international or the tourism title. Her drawback is her height.
Candidate 7, Patricia Lae Ejercitado charmed me because of her chameleon ways. She had been compared to a lot of beauty queens. But what enamored me to this girl is her capability to emote different personages in every appearance she had. She could be prim and proper, she could be sophisticated, she could be avant-garde, and she could be a vixen and the like. She is ready to slug it out for the Miss Universe Philippines title. Her skin complexion and her exotic aura is a shoo-in for the title.
Candidate 8, Nicole Schmitz is another comebacking wannabe like Patricia. She is ready for the Universe and International titles. Nicole fits these titles to a T. As I have said Nicole should tone down her make-up and change her styling. She is much better looking in her previous outings where she has lighter make-up. In those outings she exudes a youthful and vibrant impression.
Candidate 9, MJ Lastimosa is back to claim what should be rightfully hers. MJ still has that vavaboom body to die for. But it seems like that MJ toned down her demeanor. If she was fierce in the 2011 edition, she is 2 rungs down during the screenings. She does not seem to overshadow her competitor. I do not know if this is her camps approach for her – long rung during the beginning then full blast in the week come pageant day. MJ will slug it out for the Miss Universe Philippines title.
Candidate 18, Janine Tugonon is another candidate likely to the Top 5. Although I did not like her styling and body during the first callback, she improved a lot better during the second call back. If this girl is really up to the title, then she should not rest in her laurel. All other candidates are hungry for a crown and it becomes disappointing if she turns out to be another runner-up or will oust from the winning Top 5.
BUBBLING-UP : 5,14,15,29
Why did I say that for Janine. Here’s the reason why.
Candidate Number 5, Rose Ann Aguilar is stepping up her competitive attidude. She is fierce. She is vibrant and she has attitude to win. On the other hand, Candidate Number 14, Gina Joy Howell is looming to be one of the dark horses for the Bb. Pilipinas-International title. Given a better styling and presentation, this girl will go places. However, I see during her screening, she had poor make-up, poor hairdo and poor dress fitting. In her previous performances like commercials and fashion shows, she looked exceedingly well. I am wondering why she does not exude what I saw in her previously.
Another lady bubbling-up is Candidate Number 15 – Elaine Kay Moll. She has the height. She has a decent face as one pundit say. And yet why is she just bubbling? Well, one of the reasons is she had poor make-up and styling. Make-ups and styling should highlight and beautify a person. But in the case of Elaine, her looks disappointingly becomes appalling. She simply does not shine. Her candid pictures are a lot better than those that are done with make-up. Her handlers should look into this so that she can up her ante. Elaine has not taken advantage of her height. She seemed ill-at ease in her poses. Add to this, her belly area protrudes whenever she makes her poses in swimsuit and this is not good to see. She should look for a correction of this. Again pundits say, if she wins, she has all the time to correct this with training and what have you. But my say, is that there are other candidates that are well-prepared to grab the lead and win the crown this time. As of now, she is a dark-horse like Candidate Number 5.
Pageant fans point to Candidate Number 29’s deficit. One of them had even the temerity to take a picture how high was her heels. Oh well, when all the candidates use 6-inches heels, they will still be compared with their own heights. This girl is pretty. She has the body. She can communicate. She even is a professional singer. She can be the girl that Binibining Pilipinas is looking for. However, she lacks in the height department. And the problem with Ali Forbes is that when she stands side by side with the other candidates, she loses the spark and the others outshine her. I don’t know how she can remedy this. But as of now Ali is a pretty good alternate for the Binibining Pilipinas-International title.
