CRUMBS AND TIDBITS AT THE MISS WORLD PHILIPPINES 2012

By Dominador Agbayani

In my experience as a pageant enthusiast, there would always be a surprise winner among the cream of the crop and sometimes it perplexes us as we are not ready to accept such occurrence. Well, for this issue, I would like to dissect the Miss World Philippines phenomenon and see why such things evolved and eventually the results came out that way.

THE PHENOMENON OF AN UNHERALDED CANDIDATE

Candidate Number 2 – Vanessa Claudine Amman , 23, 5’7” from Lapu-lapu City  and of Fil-German ancestry has been  labeled by one blogger that she is an unconventional beauty. With her curly hair and friendly deportment Vanessa attracts people to her. I had to take a second look with this girl as she snatched several minor but meaningful special awards. What made this girl popular among the other candidates as well as the pageant sponsors? I noticed that live-bloggers were wishing she will not win as she might upstage the more favorite candidates. I told my paparazzi to get a closer look with this lady and here are her notes about this girl. Pictures do not give justice to this girl. This girl according to my paparazzi has a beautiful angelic face that makes you look at her in an immemorial mode. She has also the fashionista look and she can easily change from a sedate, mild to a fierce girl ready to pounce on every opportunity to look her best. Although she only made it to second princess position, she really gave the other a big big scare even toppling 2 favorites along the way. I would say, way to go lady….

THE "WHY ARE THEY NOT THERE PHENOMENON?"

I have my personal favorites and of course most of them were not there. But I would say this question to three ladies who I think should be in.

First is  my favorite to be part of the Top 5 and I even ranked her Number 2. She is no other than Candidate Number 8 – Maham Ahmed. I described her as the X-factor girl. She is a newbie and yet she stood out among the rest with that haughty posture but with very expressive eyes. This favorite of mine did not even enter the Top 12. Beats me! So I ask my paparazzi to do some research on her. Well she is only 17 years old and with her youth, she needed to have more exposure in the ramp and other pageants to steel her nerves. Although she had had exposures in pageants, these were not totally triumphal events. Even in contests that should be a piece of cake for her, she would end up just a runner-up. Well, probably her discoverer may have thought that the tough Miss World Philippines is the venue to showcase her. But I think it is too early and premature as what we have been exposed to, the MWP has become a battleground of pageant veterans who have been denied a crown in other pageants and are therefore out to prove their mettle and worth. Maham might have all the physical attributes but may have melted down because of inexperience. But if the judging was done during the night, one of Maham’s downfall is her gown. But I doubt because Mary Anne Ross Misa was garbed in a more disastrous gown and was able to penetrate the Top 12.

The reasons are probably the same with Candidate No. 9 Rizzini Alexis Gomez. She has the beauty and grace. She was captivating during the fashion show. With a very beautiful ironed hair during that event, it was a reaffirmation that she is one girl to watch out for. But alas, she was nowhere in the Top 12. I can’t fathom the reason behind this as I felt she was a lot better than the other girls that entered the Magic Circle.

The same is true with Candidate Number 21, Fer Mary Baliquig. Her bearing and her deportment was really stunning and yet she was never in the Magic 12. I feel for this girl. She had what it takes but I think she was lost in the many beautiful faces of this years’ edition. In my honest opinion, Fer Mary should take cognizance of the fact that joining pageants like this needs luck, perseverance and timing. Perseverance is on her side. But she lacks the luck and timing factors. It is timing that is very important. Her loss in the Binibini is something one can easily accept because her packaging is not complete at that time. But her transformation for the MWP is something to crow about and yet……it is still wanting because she did not make it even to the Top 12. Pray tell, if she still has the guts to enter the pageant arena in the next few years, she should hone herself more. Build a resume of formidability and probably people will look back and find out that there is a great gem in her.

THE BUZZ

There is a great buzz within the great hall where the pageant was being held. Of course Ruffa Gutierrez who is one of the hosts that evening was again talk of the town. The Paparazzi allegedly shamed her to bits and pieces by highlighting sexual innuendos and such that she was appalled by such incongruous action. She is supposed to be a star of TV 5 and yet she was given that such kind of treatment in that TV show. Is this probably the reason why her TV hosting is such a bore? Not even the irrepressible Edu Manzano can put the show to a higher level. But I think the MWP is just being true to form. The international pageant Miss World is one of the most boring pageant shows and as I said, it puts me to slumber.

Well, if Ruffa, the Star has an axe to grind against TV 5’s Paparazzi show, well the Philippine Queen and Miss World First Princess 2011 have something to say also about how TV 5 staff treat their celebrities. Well, since these two issues are the buzzing in the arena, I cannot help myself bringing out a grin since The Buzz is in Channel 2 and yet the noise is in the backyard of TV 5. Hmmmm….I smell something. Is this something engineered like a gimmick so that the show will generate more viewership for TV 5? Well, if this is their intention, they should be prepared to entertain the viewers since the show is such a bore just like their mother pageant.

THE CRUMBS

Well, when we say crumbs, they are referred to as the bits and pieces. Let us enumerate these crumbles that I have heard from the grape vine. These are not surefire real things but for the sake of others who are not in the pageant hall that night, let me just put them in passing and here they are:

1.    Some wagging tongues tell me that one of the real reasons that TV5 placed its put down on the First Princess is that she is responsible for the inclusion of two candidates who are not in the original list. These two candidates came from the group that she is affiliated to. Some members of the screening committee complained about this to the Franchisee and that it was said the Miss talked to her and whatever transpired between them was in utmost confidentiality. But my own paparazzi ( not the Paparazzi of Ruffa, please. I beg to differ from them….Lolz) said THE MISS chastised the Princess. So in underscoring it further, the paparazzi said, Strike 1. Poor Princess she did that to give favor to 2 aspiring pageant handlers who cannot wait for their time to blossom and be heralded as a great beauty queen maker.
2.    A friendship might have been severed. The Princess invited her friend to join their camp but the friend is so loyal to her camp. The girl with the dreaded number ended up as a primary princess too in local edition.
3.    The winningest beauty handler who is now the talk of the town is the handler of the Queen and the First Princess. Everyone talks so highly of him for being not only lucky but also for stumbling on girls who had the “Queen” aura.
4.    The brickbat of all pageant aficionados nowadays are two great pretenders that tell everyone that they can make beauty queens even out of mole hills. They are being reminded of the adage “One swallow does not make a summer.”

So there you have it. Our blogspot is not really about crumbs and bits but since they make good stories, let me just dip into the fray once in a while. The seemingly boring proceedings of the pageant became instantly interesting because of the buzz….
