THE BINIBINING PILIPINAS IDOL 2012

By Arden D. Bautista

After watching the Primer, it gives me the feeling that I am watching American Idol. All those sob stories and interesting highlights about the candidates were shown during the primer. Whoa…..What a similar approach to creativity but it is very obvious that ABS-CBN copied the approach and it sucks. Are we wanting too much in creativity now?

But I must admit the Primer to the pageant gave a very insightful picture of who the girls are. It created a more humane approach to the candidates and you can have a peek on who among the candidates possess the heart and soul of a beauty queen.

1. Karen Gallman
She holds one of the most beautiful faces that graced the Binibining Pilipinas Beauty pageant this year. With her charms and wit, she is a big contender for the Binibining Pilipinas International title. She exudes charm and the Japanese appeal for fair-skinned candidates. However, Karen has strong competition from two candidates: Nicole Schmitz and Ali Forbes who I think are much prepared to take on the challenge for Miss International.

Primer wise, Karen stood by all the impression she had created when she screened for the Binibini. She is loquacious. She is full of wit. She is a lady of intellectual substance. But also in the primer we saw how her other physical deficits toned down her charms.
She is a shoo-in for a semifinal slot but I have doubts if a Top 5 finish is feasible. Most of the candidates upped their ante as seen during the Primer.

2. Romelyn De Castro
Romelyn’s strongest performance is at the National Costume competition wherein I gave her a first runner-up performance. Other than that, Romelyn needs to get all her strength to strength just to get noticed on final night. She is in a difficult situation even for a semi-finalist slot for this girl. She probably knew that she is not a favored girl. That’s why she is so tight and that her interviews were perceived as forcing through.

3. Nicole Marable
As I have said before, this girl is a novice. She has raw potentials. Compared to other candidates who are more seasoned in the stage and in the public relations department, she needs to step up her agenda in order to win. She has distant possibility for a semi-finalist position and remote for a Top 5 position.
In the primer however, Nicole let loose her emotions and she was able to be impart the angst of her feelings towards the emotional uncertainty of having a father who is in the military.

4. Jaine Hidalgo
This girl showed what it takes to fight it out with others who also think they have what it takes. She is consistent all throughout but when you see her almost the same through all the activities, you now get the feeling of getting bored. I really don’t know if Jaine could sustain the momentum and clinch a slot for the Top 12. She is nearly there in my rankings and a slip from one of the stronger candidates will finally did her in. But for the Top 5, a very remote possibility.

5. Rose Ann Uy Aguilar
She has an undoubtedly Chinese appeal. She has the mestiza-Chinese look and it is not a surprise that she commands attention with them. Her beauty pageant resume speaks it and if judges will look at that and saw her prospects, she is a shoo-in for the Tourism title which will be held in Chinese soil. But since the competition to the Top 5 slots are so great, a semifinal slot again for RoseAnn is a strong possibility. A top 5 is endearing but very difficult for her to achieve.

6. Maria Alicia Elena Ariosa
This girl is beautiful in her own way but when shown with the other candidates, she is lost to oblivion. A far off possibility for a semifinalist finish. She was amply conversant though.

7. Patricia Lae Ejercitado
This girl showed consistency on almost all activities. She was weakest during the Talent presentation. She managed to pull some aces during that activity but she was not really the “glorious” Goddess that other would want to see. She probably learned her lessons on that because in the next set of activities, she metamorphosed into a doll persona. She is great and she is a contender for the Top 5 position. Even her shots in the Primer, she was bubbly and charming. She can amply communicate what she wants to impart with the audience.
Patricia is a very good Philippine representative to any pageant. She is a painter and she can bring one of her paintings to the host of the pageant and she can present the painting as her goodwill gift to the host. If not, the painting can be part of the auction where the candidates raise funds for a charity that the pageant is sponsoring.

8. Nicole Schmitz
If the news in the grapevine is true that she is only a contender for the Miss International and Miss Tourism titles, so be it. This girl should not be deprived of a crown as she deserves nevertheless. I have always been of the contention that this girl is a lot better during her first participation in the contest. She had a refreshing allure to her presentation. In this present participation, although she still presents the spunk that was her trademark, her styling remains to be wanting. There is still a good number of days to look into her best hairstyle and make-up as this truly affects her total package. She is a sure semi-finalist and a good Top 5. I still put some doubts about her getting in the Top 5 because of so much news in the grapevine. If she does not get into the Top 12 or Top 5, then these hush-hush are true.
In the Primer however, there is no trace of any buckling from this girl. It is as if there is no news to that effect and she just came out the best of them all. She has the spunk and grit. She has the spontaneity and wit. I believe every pageant organizer would love to have this girl represent the organization and the country it stands for.
It is such a surprise she was chosen as Best in National Costume. Because nowhere that her costume is a terno. And I want to emphasize that the Philippine National Costume is the terno. However, there is no use debating. They have chosen her because she carried the costume with so much spark and composure.

9. MJ Lastimosa
No one will argue that this girl is hungry for the crown and she is one of the contenders for the BbPU crown. However this is my take with her. She is improperly made up and styled. The eyeshadow and eyeliner done on her do not do justice for her. Yes it attracts to attention to her but another reason. It is ugly on her. They should use eye shadows and eyelines for her that will be more defining for this girl. More so, they colored her hair to light brown when she is gorgeous and adorable in black-blue hair color. The hair should be in a bun up and not those curly-curly hairs that do not flatter her face at all As I have said, she is a crown contender and no one can take that away from her. Not even the poor make-up and styling. She is a Top 5 contender. But I must warn her handlers, some other beautiful girls may slug it out with her if she comes out so messy on final night. Let us be more creative, what is good for one candidate in the past may not be good to another because they have different personalities and physical characteristics.
MJ should be very careful with the way she delivers her answers. Some critics pick it up from there and they start critiquing her.

10. Jill Orbina
This girl I have great admiration for her strong will to win a crown. But to win a crown, one should also work for it. Jill, seems to have lost the zest starting from the Operation Smile activities. She looks unkempt. Her hair seemed not to have been combed. She attended the affair with nary a make-up. And it showed. And it glared. Come parade of beauties, her little imperfections were obviously noted. I can always remember the words of wisdom of a known beauty queen when she said: “The mark of a true beauty queen is that she can maintain her flawless skin and radiate an everlasting beauty despite the stress, pressures and fatigue that set in during the pageant activities.” I just nodded in agreement as I noticed; a lot of candidates failed because on final reckoning they have collapsed near the finish line. I hope candidate Number 10 perks up and show that there is so much in her to win this pageant. A semifinal slot is a possibility. She is still has the last few days before house-in to correct the flaws she got into.
In the primer, they played her story about her slippers and it was a sob story. It is very reminiscent with the stories played up in American Idol where the candidates tell all their sob stories to get votes from the audience.

11. Marie Peter
In a recent write-up, I wrote that I am a convert of this girl. But there is a reconversion. This girl is very good onstage. No doubt. She sizzles. But news is filtering that she has also a divanesque attitude. I am beginning again to dislike her as she clearly showed this demeanor during the recent activities that I saw her. Although we cannot deny the fact that she is a big possibility for a semi-finalist slot. For the Top 5 position, it is a little far.

12. Ayelee Dasalla
I am at a loss with this girl. She is very beautiful and yet she does not shine. She’s dull and boring. I would not be surprised if she penetrates the Top 12 by sheer beauty alone. Ayalle however is a prime example for those whose advocacy is trimming down weight. She proves that she can have a physicaly trimmed body from a previous obese one.

13. Katrina Jayne Dimaranan
This girl shot up to prominence during the fashion show. She looked great and thus touted to be one of those contenders. But just as she shot up she is losing those sparks just the same as she did not radiate in their present outings like their appearance in the ASAP TV show (she was the girl that introduced the pageant for April 15), and the meet and greet activities. Is this a result of the buzz about her possible ineligibility for a crown?
At the Primer, Katrina showed that she can talk the talk and equally expound controversial issues like divorce. Although Katrina showed great ease in explaining her views, she may come too obtrusive and may be disliked and may come out as arrogant with the way she talked. She even looked condescending.

14. Gina Joy Howell
This girl is not consistent. She had looks that are so plain and yet on some activities, she is just so full of glam and sophistication. This girl should learn to step up and make her bearing more consistent. The girls are being monitored and if she is consistent always, she will be a frontrunner. I have heard people talk about her nose. I know there is not enough time to do enhancements but a careful and well-conceived make- up would create an illusion of facial perfection. She is a semi-finalist contender and if the breaks are with her, a runner-up or even the BbPI is not far-fetched.
Her presentation in the primer is so dull. In some panning shots, she let go of some smirks that could labeled as unladylike.

15. Elaine Kay Moll
Elaine’s performance is quite spotty. She was very good during the National Costume competition. Then she got lost among the other bevy of beauties who are out to make a mark in the competition. Her simplicity does not radiate and there seem to be a tentative attitude during the activities. However during the last Greet and Meet activity, she donned a new hairdo and make-up. She was noticed because the hairdo looked peculiar to her. The make-up did her well and thus, she created quite a sensation but still she did not upstage the other girls who are said to be frontrunners. It must be noted however the fact that she created a second look this time is enough consolation that people are watching her and thus, a candidate to reckon with.
In the primer, she looked so plain. She seemed not to have any make-up on and that her purest essentials were beyond acceptable for a crown.

16. Leizl Alcantara
She shot into everyone’s consciousness during the Press presentation. Although she wore an unflattering National Costume gown, she carried herself adequately to give critical pundits enough respect for her. In every activity she is consistent. She has this sweet aura that the Japanese audience would love.
However when I watched her in the Primer, Liezl showed diffidence. Such attitude does not make her shine but just blend with the other. Although at times when the camera panned among the candidates, she exuded the aura of Precious Lara Quigaman. I suppose she should have a review of her performances and review what was shown in the primer as this will guide her to correct her deficiencies. It is only a week now and cramming may not give her the benefit.
I still find Leizl to be a possible Top 5 qualifier. A title would be a crowning glory for her. A runner-up position is still a feather for her cap. I believe she will be in the semi-finalist list.

17. Ana Czarina Buenviaje
Ana Czarina has an enigmatic countenance. When you look at her, she is an ordinary beauty but she emits a different kind of sparkle that merits a second look. Ana Czarina’s performance however in the different activities is neither here nor there. However, her performance at the Primer showed that she can slug it out for a semifinalist position. But there would be too much competition for her to be in the Top 5.

18. Janine Tugonon
The girl touted to be the winner of the Bb. Pilipinas-Universe title. She was oozing with confidence when she was last seen during the Meet and Greet activity. But I do not see anything extraordinary to crow about Janine. Her body figure is not something to boast about. Her glamour shots were manipulated to show that she had curves. Her make-up was simply disastrous. They put smokey eye shadows on her and she looked like a raccoon. No matter what her handlers do, they can’t beautify her. It was very much unlike last year when she was never trying hard. She was fresh. She was just simply competing and enjoying every minute of fame. Now, she had to prove something and that something had never surfaced. Poor Janine, if she wins the top plum, she would have to undergo the pain of the brickbats thrown at her until she competes for the title of Miss Universe. If she wins, all those brickbats would be swallowed with jubilations but if she loses, all those brickbats continue until a new queen will be crowned.
Janine showed a very haughty demeanor in the Primer for the pageant. In the panning shots during the sessions with Boy Abunda, she projected such a puffed-up demeanor. The way she projected it is as if she is it. I cannot even find the trace of the sweet demure looking Janine of 2011.

19. Roxanne Joy Jesalva
I used to like this girl. I saw in her the promise of representing our country well in an international pageant. However, in the last rounds of activities, she was made-up so improperly and that she seemed to have lost steam. Her pictures show a haggard looking girl despite the smiles that emanated from her. When paired in picture with the girls in the earlier number and when seen with Liezl Alcantara, she seemed to be thrown into oblivion.
This girl when glammed up is really beautiful but when she is not with make-up on, she is just ordinary. She evoked a tense-filled candidate and it shows in her performance for the Primer.

20. Roxanne Tadique
Roxanne is a very captivating girl. Armed with wit and intellect, a semi-finalist slot would be the most that she could grab unto with. It would therefore not surprise me if she will not be called for a semifinal slot.

21. Giselle Munoz
She is sometimes called by the fans as a girl with no consequence. This means to say that Giselle will not matter in the contest. But Giselle has an ace on her sleeves. Her aptitude may pull her up to the semi-finalist round. But I don’t think aptitude alone will be a basis for selecting the best candidate as this is still called a beauty pageant.

22. Meiji Cruz
Do not count Meiji out of contention just yet. Some international respondents to Queentessence survey put her in the Top 5. Hence, as I have always underscored, people have a different concept of beauty. Lady luck may just smile on her and a semifinalist slot will be a reality for her.

23. Goldy Baroa
The contention about Meiji is the same as with Goldy. She does not get enough media and even internet forum space. She is not popular among the fans but as one supporter for this lady said, she is a beauty in her own way.

24. Fer Baliquig
For the past few activities, Fer started to bring her positive aura. Her exotic features have become more pronounced and accompanied by her thoughtful gestures and loving character, she is getting noticed. For me she is one of the dark horses of the pageant and if she comes through and get into the semifinal round, it will not be surprise to me.

25. Chloe Zanardi
Chloe’s shot to fame is through her last name which is of Italian origin. She is half-Italian by the way. Although she is a good and charming girl, her performances are not enough to lift her past the other contenders for the pageant.

26. Angelee Delos Reyes
Angelee is another dark horse in this pageant. Many pageant pundits surveyed put her into their list and because of this, she may be able to penetrate the semifinalists circle.

27. Golda Soller
There is something in this girl that makes her very attractive. Her smile, her body and her poses are very reminiscent of the regal ladies in the vintage years of the pageant. Do you think this queenly demeanor will still be a hit among pageant aficionados’ all over the world? She is a maybe in or maybe out candidate in this case. Her primer performance is not too appealing as she looked old in her hairstyle. I liked her but I have doubts about her placement.

28. Marie Irisha Arcenas
She’s such a sweet girl but I must say she should not be in pageants. But if strings were pulled, I think she will be a consideration for a Top 12 position. That is how far she can get.

29. Annalie Forbes
She is such a low profile girl. Although a lot like her some say she does not create too much ripples because she is of short stature. But I am so surpised, a lot of those that were polled on who would be the Top 5 for Binibining Pilipinas 2012, puts her in their list. She is a shoo-in for a semifinalist slot and she may penetrate the Top 5 surprising the other taller girls.

30. Sherlyn Gonzales
She is another petite candidate but a lot of pundits put her in their list. She is very attractive, charming and sweet.

NOW MY FINAL TOP 12 BETS AFTER THE PRIMER….
1,4,5,7, 8,9, 14, 15,16,18, 29,30

POSSIBLE TOP 5: 7,8,9,18,29
MY PERSONAL CHOICES IRREGARDLESS OF SOME RUMORED DISQUALIFICATION ISSUES:
POSSIBLE PLACEMENTS: 8 - UNIVERSE
18 -  INTERNATIONAL
9 - TOURISM
7 - FIRST RUNNER-UP
29 - SECOND RUNNER-UP

Idols as they may be, the candidates will not be judged by the audience just what happens at the American Idol. The final arbiter for the Binibining Pilipinas would still be a set of judges who will evaluate the candidates as to their beauty, body figure, elan, personality and projection and lastly wit and intellect. Irregardless whether they had a sob story to tell or a highly charged story. That final decision would still be by the judges and the organization to a certain extent.
